Travel Tips

The things you don't want to figure out a week before your trip.

A few quick reminders I share with every traveler I work with.

REAL ID or passport — which one do you need?

REAL ID is now required to board domestic flights in the United States. A lot of travelers ask whether they also need a passport — the answer depends on how you travel.

  • ✔ Flying only inside the U.S.? A REAL ID-compliant driver's license or state ID may be enough.
  • ✔ Want the option to travel internationally? A valid U.S. passport is the better choice.
  • ✔ Many travelers carry both, just in case.

DMV appointments and passport processing both take time — handle this well before your travel dates.

Traveling internationally? Enroll in STEP.

The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service from the U.S. Department of State. It's one of the most important things you can do before leaving the country.

  • ✅ Safety alerts for your destination
  • ✅ The U.S. Embassy can reach you in an emergency
  • ✅ Your family can reach you if there's a crisis
  • ✅ Real-time updates about travel conditions

We've all been there: 200 messages in and no one has booked a flight. Freedom to Explore specializes in project-managed group travel. I take the "who's paying for what" and "where are we staying" off your plate so the friendship stays front and center.
